We’re delighted to confirm that a showing of the 1979 movie version of The Riddle of the Sands, starring Michael York, Simon MacCorkindale and Jenny Agutter, is going to be put on by Arthur Beale, the only ships chandler left in Central London, on the evening of July 2 2015. Do come along!
suggested Film Club attire – optional
Apparently there are already enough of us that we’re going to relocate from the shop to St Giles-in-the-Fields church across the road. Here are the details:
There is an entry fee of £5.00 fee on the door (chiefly to cover the cost of hiring a copy of the film), but this can be waived if you buy anything on the day at Arthur Beale amounting to more than £15.00.
If you have pledged support at Unbound for our project at Film Club level or higher, Lloyd and I will cover your entry fee. If you pledge at that level or higher between now and July 2, we’ll also cover the cost of entry for you.
Timetable
18:00
Please assemble initially at Arthur Beale, 194 Shaftesbury Ave, London WC2H and have a good mooch around. It’s a great shop.
18:30
We move over to the church in groups. We’ll keep the back row free if we can for latecomers. The address is The Parish Church of St Giles-in-the-Fields, 60 St Giles High Street, London WC2H 8LG.
Since it’s a church, it’s possible it might get chilly later on (just guessing about this), so maybe bring a jumper or coat just in case…
18:45
Lloyd and I will introduce the movie and record a short piece for a podcast. It’ll be your chance to quiz us about what we’re up to, and we’re hoping to interview a couple of people about their own creative entanglements with ‘The Riddle of the Sands’.
In the spirit of Davies & Carruthers, I’ll also be offering the kind of grog and schnapps we think would have been on board Dulcibella (free of charge, but donations to the Club coffers via a pledge at Unbound is welcome!).
